Can A Dental Implant Be Replaced?

Dental implants have improved by leaps and bounds in recent years, and have also become a much more common treatment in the field of restorative dentistry. While the use of dental implants is commonplace, there are instances where various issues may occur with the patient or the implant itself that requires removal.

You don't need to suffer from ill-fitting false teeth. Dental implants are replacement teeth that screw directly into your jawbone so they never come loose, and you do not have to take them out to clean them at night. Dental implants can restore your smile due to missing teeth. They look natural and remain in place to appear completely natural as well.

In that case of failed implants, removal is usually easy to perform and safe for the gums, bone and surrounding tissues. There are times, however, when enough time has elapsed that the implant will have become fully integrated with the bone, and removal may result in trauma or worse, severe bone loss.

Why would a dental implant fail?

There are basically two types of dental implant failure that depend on timing. Dental implants that fail within several months of placement are known as early failures. Dental implants that face early failures are typically due to improper or poor healing in the patient's mouth, lack of stability due to lack of bone support or micromotion during the healing process that prevents the proper bonding to support the implant.

Other more acute failures are the result of trauma, poor oral hygiene, or other health-related issues. These failures tend to be a year or more after the initial implant with inserted and require individual evaluation for further treatment options.

Can a dental implant be replaced?

The burning question that probably brought you to this page is if in fact dental implants can be replaced after they fail or have been removed. The short answer is yes in most cases, though each patient's oral care requires customized care.

An implant that failed due to a lack of bone can be replaced right away in conjunction with a bone grafting procedure that will help support the replacement dental implant and thus increase the chances of the implant bonding. Not only does pairing the graft with the replacement save time, it will reduce the need for additional surgical visits at the dentist office.

In some instances, damage from failed dental implants, or to the oral cavity surrounding the implant, is so destructive that professionals cannot install the replacement quickly enough.  These cases are often due to failed implant removals that create large holes in the bone.

There are also cases where professionals can recover failed implants without replacement. There is still much to consider in the field of restorative dentistry regarding using active bone grafting to save ailing dental implants instead of removal and rebuilding. This in effect would give the implant a second chance at healthy grafting as opposed to risking any additional loss of healthy bone that often accompanies removal and replacement.
