Dental implant surgery is a popular and long lasting way to replace a missing tooth, but like any surgeries, there is a recovery process that patients must go through. If you are considering a dental implant or had implant surgery done recently, it’s important to understand what to expect during the recovery period.
The dental implant surgery recovery process typically involves several stages, starting immediately after the surgery and lasting for several months as the implant fuses with the jawbone. Here is a breakdown of what you can expect during each stage of the recovery process.
- Immediately after the surgery for a few days: You will experience some degree of discomfort, swelling, and bleeding during this initial recovery period. Your dentist may provide you with pain medication along with detailed instructions on how to care for the surgical site. You will also be advised to eat softer foods and avoid chewing on the side of the surgery. Limit yourself to calm activities and rest well with plenty of fluid.
- Stage of soft tissue (gum) healing: Over the next 2-4 weeks, most discomfort shall subside as soft tissue (gum) heals. Swelling and bleeding also shall disappear by the end of this period. The key thing to do during this period is to keep the surgical site as clean as possible with frequent irrigation (rinsing) with salt water. You may resume your oral hygiene routine (brushing and flossing) per your dentist’s instruction. Avoid applying any force on the newly placed implant until it is fully fused (integrated) with bone (normally takes 4-6 months).
- Stage of implant fusing with your bone (aka “Osseo-integration”): During this phase, there hardly be any discomfort associated with your implant treatments and minimal restrictions as what you cannot do. Just continue to avoid applying force on the implants as your implant is not stable enough to tolerate biting force. This “implant fusing with your bone” phase takes a long time to complete, usually about 6 months in the upper arch and 4 month in the lower arch.
- Stage of making and installing final restoration: Once your implant has fully integrated, your dentist will attach a permanent abutment and a crown to the implant fixture. This will require additional appointments for molding (or 3-D scan) of your implant fixture and other teeth in your mouth. Your new implant crown will look and feel like natural teeth, allowing you to eat and speak with confidence.
Throughout the whole recovery process, it’s important to take care of your oral health by practicing good brushing and flossing, and visiting your dentist for regular check-ups. Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol, as these can slow down the healing process and increase the risk of complications.
