Straightening Teeth With a Cosmetic Dentist

If you want to improve the look of your smile, then the first person to visit is your local cosmetic dentist. Cosmetic dentistry is the branch of dental care that covers all the different types of aesthetic treatments that make your smile look its best. If you have alignment issues making your teeth look crooked, you might consider teeth straightening as a solution to get that perfect smile you want.

If you think teeth straightening might be the answer to getting the smile you have always wanted, then you are in luck. There are a few options for getting straighter teeth, and your dentist will help you pick the best choice for your given situation.

What are my options for straighter teeth?

Getting straighter teeth is not difficult, but it can take time, depending on a few factors.

The dentist will first want to perform a detailed examination of your mouth to determine the state of your teeth, how bad the crowding is, and the reason behind it. Depending on the answers the dentist finds will determine what solution they suggest to fix your crowding and alignment issues.

The most common choice to straighten teeth is braces. Traditional braces use a series of brackets and wires to gently pull teeth into the proper position over time. Braces work on even the most severe cases of crooked or misaligned teeth and make a smile look beautiful once they are finished working. The downside is that wearing braces is no short endeavor. It can take anywhere from 18 months to 3 years or longer to work. They can also be painful and uncomfortable for some patients, which may mean going back to the dentist to have them adjusted.

In mild cases, using another straightening option known as a clear aligning tray may be possible. There are many brands and types of aligning trays, but the primary goal is to straighten teeth without being visible to the naked eye so they can be worn in public with more comfort. They can also be removed for short periods, making them more tolerable for patients with sensitivity issues or who do not like wearing dental appliances.

Clear aligners do not work for all situations, but for those that they are effective on, they are preferred by patients and take less time to do the job. This is a great choice to straighten your teeth if you have the option.

Pulling teeth

In some cases, rather than a realignment, you may simply need more room in your mouth than you currently have for your teeth to fit. This is typically caused by still having wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are actually extra teeth that many people have removed so that the rest of their teeth will fit properly, and this is a very common procedure. If this is the case for you, your cosmetic dentist may order a wisdom tooth removal as a way to help straighten your smile and give you the look you have always wanted.
